RIP Alan Rickman

Alan-Rickman

We’re very sad to hear that Alan Rickman has died, aged 69. He was one of the best movie villains ever as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, then topped that performance with his Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. Grown-ups will, of course, remember him for his superb turns in Truly Madly Deeply and Love Actually, for his movies as a director (The Winter Guest and the recent A Little Chaos) and his stunning stage performances in Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Private Lives. To a generation of children, however, he will always be Severus Snape…

Who will be the young Han Solo? #starwars

old-star-wars-poster

A Han Solo movie – telling the story of our roguish hero before he met Luke and Leia in A New Hope – is in the works, with a planned release date of May 25th, 2018. Movie industry magazine Variety reports that the movie’s directors (Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who made The Lego Movie) and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy will soon be screen-testing a handful of actors to see who is best suited to the role of a young Han. (You can read the Variety article HERE). So who are the young men (all aged between 20-30 it seems) who will potentially be slapping on a waistcoat and blaster to pilot the Millennium Falcon? Here’s the list…

Miles Teller

tumblr_static_bv9wuijtehkckwwsg8k4wk4cgKids will recognise him as Peter in the Divergent movies and, erm, as Reed Richards in last year’s flop Fantastic Four. Twenty-eight year old Teller won raves for his performances in Whiplash and The Spectacular Now.

Ansel Elgort

img-thingAnother Divergent star (he’s Caleb), Elgort became a teen pin-up thanks to his role in the weepie The Fault In Our Stars. He’s 21.

Dave Franco

tt2-39LNBrother of actor James, 30-year-old Dave has appeared in the 21 Jump Street movies, the comedy Bad Neighbours and the drama Now You See Me (both of which are getting sequels this year).

Scott Eastwood

scott-eastwood-more-0007Clint Eastwood’s 29-year-old son made his movie debut in his father’s drama Flags Of Our Fathers, and has since appeared in the romantic drama The Longest Ride and the upcoming comic book movie Suicide Squad.

Emory Cohen

EmoryCohenGETTY.jpg.644x6102_q10025-year-old Emory has been winning praise for his role as the Italian American who steals Saoirse Ronan’s heart in the drama Brooklyn, and he also appeared in the drama The Place Beyond The Pines and the TV series Smash.

Logan Lerman

Logan Lerman

Will the star of the Percy Jackson movies be picked for another fantasy franchise? It doesn’t look like there will be any more Percy movies so the 24-year-old actor stands a good chance.

Blake Jenner

MV5BNjgxOTE4NDI2MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjE4MTAxMDE@._V1_SX640_SY720_Jenner starred as Ryder in Glee, and has followed it up with a role as Adam in the TV series Supergirl. The 23-year-old has also written a movie – Billy Boy – which he also stars in that’s due for release this year.

Jack Reynor

2012 Toronto International Film FestivalPersonally, we think Chris Pratt or Joshua Jackson would have been perfect if the movie had been made a few years ago (at 36 and 37 respectively they’re both older than Harrison Ford was when he first played Han, aged 35). But if we had to choose from the younger names being mentioned in Variety, Jack Reynor, the star of the most recent Transformers movie, as well as a supporting cast member in A Royal Night Out and Macbeth, gets our vote.
